BCG x EcoG
Learn more about the modular Powerblock & Dispenser architecture as the emerging trend of scalable, flexible EV charging infrastructure.
Executive Summary
Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and EcoG join forces to examine the shift in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure from traditional stand-alone systems to modular architectures.
The global EV market is projected to grow at 28% CAGR, requiring over 122 million charge points by 2030.
This white paper compares two major charging site layouts: stand-alone and modular architectures. Stand-alone systems integrate power electronics directly into each charger, while modular systems centralize power electronics in a separate unit, dynamically distributing power to individual chargers. Modular architecture is shown to provide greater scalability, flexibility, and adaptability for high-growth scenarios, particularly for large charging hubs and commercial fleet depots.
Charge Point Operators (CPOs) are advised to adopt modular systems for large-scale and scalable projects, while recommending stand-alone systems for smaller, stable installations.
By downloading this whitepaper, you will:
• Gain expert insights on the future of EV charging and market growth.
• Understand how to slash infrastructure costs by switching to modular systems.
• Learn how to easily scale your charging network as EV demand rises.
• Stay ahead of competitors with cutting-edge, future-proof technology.
Cost Savings with Modular Systems
By 2030, modular charging systems will provide 38% cost savings per charge point for large-scale charging sites compared to stand-alone systems.
Highway Charging Hub Expansion
Highway charging hubs will expand from 8 to 24 high-power chargers by 2030, delivering fast charges in under 30 minutes.
Fleet Ready
Commercial depots will expand from 10 to 50 charge points by 2030, offering flexible power solutions for fleet management.
“Charging infrastructure needs to reach the next evolutionary stage to meet the growing demand for charging - in many applications, this will require more scalable hardware. This is feasible with modular systems where the power electronics are separated from the power outlets.”
